TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo stated that 457 fires occurred in the capital from July to August 2026, with the majority caused by electrical short circuits.
"Based on reports from the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), 457 fires broke out in Jakarta from July to August, with around 240 fires in August alone," Pramono said while leading the Jakarta Guard Dry Season Preparedness Roll Call at Monas on Wednesday.
Pramono noted that the most common suspected cause of the fires was electrical short circuits. Garbage burning ranked as the second leading cause, while several other incidents stemmed from public negligence, such as carelessly discarded cigarette butts.
According to him, the dry season and increasingly hot weather also heighten the risk of fires and drought. Consequently, during the roll call, he directed the Jakarta BPBD to anticipate drought and potential water shortages across the city.
"To address this, 29 water tankers have been provided by ten participating agencies to tackle water shortages in Jakarta," Pramono explained.
He revealed that two sub-districts are currently experiencing drought: Kalibaru and Semper in North Jakarta.
Pramono also called on the Jakarta Provincial Government to stay alert and prepare comprehensive mitigation measures for the dry season. "That is what we are doing to anticipate water shortages and fires," he concluded.
