TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s presidential special envoy for energy and environment, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, said Rosan Roeslani, chief executive of Danantara Indonesia, is targeting the acquisition of land located about 400 meters from Masjid al-Haram in Mecca as part of Indonesia’s plan to develop a dedicated Hajj Village for its pilgrims.
“This month, Mr. Rosan of Danantara is bidding against dozens of competitors to secure land just 400 meters from Masjid al-Haram,” Hashim said at the Economic Briefing 2026 in Jakarta on Thursday.
He explained that the government’s decision to target land in close proximity to the mosque takes into account the age profile of Indonesian Hajj pilgrims, many of whom are elderly, particularly those aged between 60 and 70.
“Many Indonesian pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land are elderly. Some are in their 60s or 70s and have to walk 9 to 10 kilometers,” Hashim said.
He added that the planned Hajj Village is expected to provide a more comfortable, affordable, and accessible environment for Indonesian pilgrims near the Grand Mosque.
Hashim described the initiative as a breakthrough in facilitating Indonesian Muslims performing the Hajj pilgrimage.
“I’ve heard that around 15 towers will be built at the initial site. There will also be facilities such as restaurants, including Padang and Acehnese cuisine. Elderly pilgrims can rest there,” he said.
According to Hashim, the plan has been made possible following a commitment secured by President Prabowo Subianto from Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman.
“Indonesia has obtained a location near the Kaaba, close to Masjid al-Haram, around 2.5 kilometers away. This will have a significant positive impact for Indonesian Muslims,” he said.
Previously, the Indonesian government, through Danantara, secured approximately 45 hectares of land for the Hajj Village project.
The development of the project in Mecca is expected to strengthen the global halal ecosystem while generating broader economic benefits for Indonesia.
