TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Digital infrastructure provider Digital Realty Bersama (DRB) estimates that Indonesia's data center business will grow rapidly as the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology increases. Andha Yudha Permana, the Business Director of DRB, stated that the need for data centers to support AI in Indonesia has reached approximately 500 megawatts (MW).
"It is likely to double by the end of this year," said Yudha at a media event at the CGK11 data center building in Cawang, East Jakarta, on Wednesday, April 22, 2026.
As a leader in the joint venture providing data center infrastructure solutions, colocation, and interconnection, Yudha assessed that the capacity still lags behind that of neighboring countries, such as Malaysia, which has an AI capacity exceeding 1,000 MW.
According to Yudha, most AI-based data centers in Indonesia are actually built outside Jakarta, such as in Cibitung and Cikarang. This is due to the city's limited land and building structures, which do not yet support AI's infrastructure needs. "To run AI workloads, a large space is needed because one GPU (graphic processor) rack can weigh approximately 2 tons," he explained. This condition has led most AI data center providers to build projects outside Jakarta.
Meanwhile, data centers in cities like Jakarta focus on serving enterprise customers, including those in the banking and financial sectors, which require low latency.
The data center industry still faces challenges regarding electricity availability, particularly for large-scale projects. "In the city, there is actually a surplus of power, but accommodating large needs such as 100 MW will be a challenge," said Yudha.
DRB's Chief Financial Officer, Krishna Worotikan, added that the electricity requirements for AI are much higher than those for traditional computing. In other words, infrastructure readiness is a crucial factor. "The AI compute power needs can be up to ten times higher than traditional computing. If previously it might be 2-5 kilowatts per rack, for AI, we are talking about 20 kilowatts," said Krishna.
Currently, DRB operates two data center complexes in Jakarta. The 5 MW project capacity at the CKG11 complex in East Jakarta is planned to be increased to a total of 27 MW with a target completion in 2028. Meanwhile, CKG10 in West Jakarta, with a capacity of 1.5 MW, is still in the land development stage.
The company also plans to launch the latest generation interconnection solution, ServiceFabric, in the second half of 2026. DRB aims to increase the reliability and security of supporting various digital innovations through this service. "We ensure that companies in Indonesia have an easier expansion path to connect to the global ecosystem," said Krishna.
