TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The South Korean military is making "concrete preparations" to deploy personnel to the Strait of Hormuz, according to a report on Thursday, as quoted from Antara, citing Anadolu.
"We are making concrete preparations to dispatch naval forces to the Strait of Hormuz," an official at South Korea's Ministry of National Defense told Australian television station SBS.
The report stated that the process, already underway, includes deploying P-8 maritime patrol aircraft, an explosive ordnance disposal unit, and a logistics support ship.
The South Korean government previously stated that deploying its troops to the Strait of Hormuz would only occur after the end of hostilities between the United States and Iran.
However, US President Donald Trump has publicly criticized Seoul for refusing to take part in military operations against Iran, especially after the US recently reduced its participation in joint military exercises with South Korea.
"I understand that discussions regarding base ports and operational bases are also underway with the relevant countries," a senior military official said, as quoted by SBS.
However, the deployment of South Korean personnel to the Strait of Hormuz still requires approval from the South Korean National Security Council, a Cabinet resolution, and approval from the National Assembly.
