TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto said Indonesia is striving for faster economic growth to lift millions of people out of poverty and into a dignified life.
"This is why we seek faster economic growth, not growth for growth's sake, but growth that can lift millions of people out of poverty and into dignity," Prabowo said in his speech as guest of honor at the 11th Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) in Vladivostok, Russia, on Thursday, as quoted by ANTARA.
In a broadcast on the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel, Prabowo stated that this principle is part of Indonesia's economic philosophy, which prioritizes realism, pragmatism, and achieving the greatest good for the greatest number of people.
According to him, development should not only benefit a select few. The benefits experienced by families in their daily lives should be the measure. These benefits range from providing nutritious food to providing jobs and electricity.
"Development can not only benefit the few. Development must be measured at the dinner table of ordinary families: whether children receive nutritious food, whether farmers can obtain fertilizer and sell their produce at a fair price," he said.
The President said this approach is the basis for several government policies, including the provision of free nutritious food for children and pregnant women, efforts to achieve food self-sufficiency and energy security, and the acceleration of industrial downstreaming.
According to the Head of State, downstreaming aims to ensure that Indonesia's natural resources can create good industries, skills, and jobs domestically.
Prabowo believes that economic growth should address the fundamental question of how a region's wealth can improve the lives of its residents.
"This forum is essentially asking the same fundamental question as the one asked by my people to me: how can the great wealth of a region translate into a better life for the people who live there?" the President said.
