TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Brazil on Monday, August 31, reiterated its dissatisfaction with U.S. tariffs on Brazilian goods. The country described the tariffs as "unjustified and inconsistent" with international trade rules.
As reported by ANTARA, Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira and Brazilian Minister of Development, Industry, Trade and Services Marcio Elias Rosa expressed their dissatisfaction in a virtual meeting with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
In a joint statement, the two Brazilian ministries said that Brazil was being treated unfairly. They added that the reasons Washington presented in the Section 301 investigation of the U.S. Trade Act of 1974 did not reflect Brazil's actual practices.
Despite these differences, both countries agreed to continue negotiations. Technical meetings, both virtual and in-person, will be held in the coming weeks, followed by another ministerial-level meeting to assess progress.
The Brazilian government said it would continue to seek a "balanced and mutually beneficial" agreement with the U.S. through dialogue and respect for national sovereignty.
Monday's virtual meeting followed a phone call between Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and U.S. President Donald Trump on August 21. In the call, Lula again questioned the imposition of tariffs, while Trump proposed resuming negotiations.
In July, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative imposed additional 25 percent duties on several Brazilian goods after a nearly year-long review. Later, additional duties of 12.5 percent were imposed on even more Brazilian goods.
