TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A shallow earthquake struck Cianjur Regency, West Java, on Tuesday evening, September 1, 2026. The land-based earthquake registered at magnitude 4.3 and occurred at 17:53 Western Indonesia Time (WIB).

According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the quake struck at a shallow depth of 4 kilometers, with its epicenter located 10 kilometers southwest of Cianjur Regency.

"It is a shallow earthquake caused by active fault activity," said Hartanto, Head of BMKG Region II South Tangerang, in a written statement.

The tremors were felt most intensely across the Cianjur area, registering between III and IV on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale. At this intensity level, the shaking can be noticeably felt by many people indoors.

BMKG's intensity map also covered Sukabumi, Cibadak, Nagrak, Warung Kondang, Cimahi, and Cilaku at II to III MMI, where indoor tremors resemble the vibration of a heavy truck passing by. Faint shocks were additionally felt farther out in Bandung, Cibubur of East Jakarta, and Sukaraja at II MMI.

News of the earthquake spread rapidly across BMKG's social media channels, drawing immediate reactions from the public. Many residents noted that the tremors were strongly felt in areas such as Sukabumi and Bandung.

Earthquake expert and Indonesian Disaster Experts Association member Daryono stated that the quake was generated by activity along the Cimandiri Fault, specifically pointing to "the western end of the Cisokan Segment."
