TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A Philippine court has issued an arrest warrant for Vice President Sara Duterte on charges of serious threats, her lawyer said Friday. According to the Manila Times, Paul Lawrence Lim insisted Duterte "will not evade" the law and will continue to pursue legal action.
As quoted by ANTARA, Lawrence said the Quezon City Regional Trial Court issued an arrest warrant and set bail at 120,000 pesos (approximately Rp33.7 million) for each charge.
The Department of Justice filed three counts of "serious threats" against Duterte over his remarks about "assassination" of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and former House Speaker Martin Romualdez, the Philippine News Agency reported.
Duterte made the remarks during an online press conference in November 2024, saying they would be killed if he were killed.
Duterte, 48, became the Southeast Asian nation's 15th and youngest vice president when he was elected to a six-year term alongside Marcos in 2022.
Marcos' office stated that it "respects any decision or directive from the court." The vice president is also facing an impeachment trial in parliament.
Duterte, daughter of former President Rodrigo Duterte, entered politics in 2007 when she was elected vice mayor of Davao City, and served until 2010.
He was then re-elected as mayor of Davao City in 2010 and served until 2013. Duterte then won the mayoral elections in 2016 and 2019.
