TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The US Open is one of tennis’s biggest tournaments, with the sport’s top players competing for millions of dollars in prize money. But behind the scenes, ball kids play an important role in keeping matches running smoothly.
Every year, thousands of young people apply to become ball kids at the US Open. In 2026, 315 applicants were selected. The application process is competitive. Even those who are selected face additional challenges. So, what do they do, and how much are they paid?
What do US Open ball kids do?
According to GiveMeSport, being a ball kid involves much more than simply collecting tennis balls. They must stay focused throughout matches, quickly retrieve balls and help maintain the pace of play. They can also assist players by providing towels and water when needed.
Working with the ball crew, the job requires concentration, speed and endurance, particularly during long matches and New York’s summer conditions. Ball kids also have to perform under the pressure of thousands of spectators and a global television audience.
What is the salary of US Open ball kids?
According to a ball kid who has been in the role for a couple of years, they are being paid "$18 or $19 an hour" this year. In addition to the financial incentives, members of the ball crew get a daily food allowance and official tournament uniforms, designed by Ralph Lauren.
For the young people selected for the role, the experience offers more than just a paycheck. It allows them to work at one of tennis’s biggest events while gaining a behind-the-scenes look at a Grand Slam tournament.
