TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Statistics Indonesia (BPS) reported that during July 2026, the value of oil and natural gas imports increased by almost 50 percent compared to the same period the previous year. Based on the latest BPS data, imports rose by around US$1.25 billion.
Last July, the value of oil and gas imports was recorded at US$2.51 billion. “The value of oil and gas imports (July 2026) amounted to US$ 3.77 billion, an increase of 49.91 percent annually,” said Deputy of Distribution and Service Statistics BPS Ateng Hartono in a BPS press conference in Jakarta on Tuesday, September 1st, 2026.
This figure contributed to the overall increase in import value this July, which reached US$26.09 billion—a 27.02 percent increase compared to last year. On the other hand, total non-oil and gas imports were recorded at US$22.33 billion, up 23.83 percent from last year.
According to Ateng, the volume of oil and gas imports also increased by 15.44 percent in July 2026. The increase in import value far exceeded the increase in import volume. Therefore, he concluded that the surge in world oil prices was the trigger for the increase in oil and gas import figures.
“The price increase certainly contributed to the rise in oil and gas imports, just compare the values, it is much higher compared to the volumes. Hence, automatically there is a price increase that contributes to the surge,” Ateng said.
Furthermore, Ateng stated that the increase in annual oil and gas purchases was primarily due to the import of oil-derived products. This oil-derived product increased by 49.11 percent or US$48.3 million. Another type that also surged was crude oil, which spiked by US$406.3 million or reached 51.68 percent.
Cumulatively, BPS data shows that oil and gas imports throughout the period from January to July 2026 increased by US$7.39 billion or surged by 40.24 percent, driven by the increase in crude oil imports amounting to US$2.075 billion, up 41.81 percent, and oil-derived products amounting to US$5.319 billion, up 39.66 percent.
