Pentagon Seeks $80 Billion for Costs of Iran Conflict

2 hours ago 7

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta The Pentagon needs $80 billion to cover the costs of the war with Iran and various other non-war-related needs, said U.S. Deputy Defense Secretary Stephen Feinberg.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday, June 18, that Feinberg delivered the statement to lawmakers in a series of telephone conversations this week, as quoted by ANTARA.

Citing sources familiar with the discussions, the WSJ reported that U.S. Defense Department officials warned that the country's armed forces could run out of operational funds this summer if Congress does not quickly pass a new war funding bill.

Any additional Pentagon budget request must first be approved by the White House Office of Management and Budget before being submitted to Congress. The U.S. Department of Defense's current budget for fiscal year 2026 is approximately $1 trillion.

According to the report, sources familiar with the discussions said that the Pentagon was confident enough in the plan for Feinberg to brief lawmakers in recent days. Some of the additional funds will be used for warship operations, military personnel salaries and ammunition procurement, among other needs, one of the sources said.

The report also said that the U.S. government's supplemental budget request, which includes funding for the Pentagon as well as various non-defense priorities, could be sent to lawmakers in the coming days.

Feinberg's efforts to communicate with lawmakers coincided with a meeting between U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and several senior Republican senators on Capitol Hill this week. According to lawmakers, the possibility of requesting additional defense funding was also discussed during the meeting.
