TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto received a visit from the President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta. Steinmeier arrived at the official residence of the Indonesian President on Monday, June 15, 2026, around 11:30 AM local time.
The leader of the Federal Republic of Germany was escorted by 120 mounted troops when entering the palace complex. Steinmeier's car briefly toured the National Monument (Monas) area before continuing the journey to the palace across the street.
Elementary school students in red and white uniforms welcomed Steinmeier as he entered the palace gate. Steinmeier briefly opened the car window to wave to the students holding small Indonesian and German flags.
Subsequently, Prabowo welcomed Steinmeier at the car door. They observed a traditional Malay dance before continuing the welcoming procession. The national anthems of Indonesia Raya and Deutschlandlied resounded along with 21 cannon shots during the official ceremony.
When receiving Steinmeier, Prabowo was accompanied by several officials, including Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto, Foreign Minister Sugiono, Investment and Industrial Minister Rosan Roeslani, Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.
Meanwhile, President Steinmeier was accompanied by the First Lady of Germany, Elke Budenbender. In addition, the German delegation included representatives from the business, cultural, science and technology sectors.
German Ambassador to Indonesia Ralf Beste stated that the visit of the President of Germany to Jakarta is a message that Germany is a strong and reliable partner for Indonesia. Beste expressed that Steinmeier's visit is based on Germany's desire to strengthen partnerships with strong developing countries like Indonesia.
According to Ambassador Beste, Steinmeier will also have meetings and discussions with the Indonesian intellectual and research community during his visit on Monday. "In these meetings, they will discuss how Indonesia views the current geostrategic changes in the world," he said.
The German Ambassador also expressed hope that President Prabowo can reciprocate President Steinmeier's visit by making a return visit to Germany. "We hope that the visit of the German President can be reciprocated in the future," said Beste.
