TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Agriculture, Andi Amran Sulaiman, stated that the Indonesian government's rice reserve, managed by Perum Bulog, remains stable at 4.5 million tons amid the turmoil in the Middle East, ensuring the national food security remains intact and safe.
"(The government's rice supply) is now approximately 4.5 million tons. This is the highest since the establishment of the republic. So, there's no need to doubt," said Amran while inspecting the Bulog Panaikang Warehouse with the Vice President of Perum Bulog, Marga Taufiq, in Makassar, South Sulawesi, on Sunday, April 5th, 2026, as quoted from Antara.
He stated that the surge in rice supply is a real result of the government's policy that encourages a rapid increase in production to achieve self-sufficiency in the commodity in a short time.
This can be achieved through policies such as increasing the government's purchase price (HPP) for rice to Rp6,500 per kilogram, a 20 percent decrease in subsidized fertilizer prices, modern agricultural transformation, and various other strategic policies.
"At present, in accordance with the direction of President Prabowo, the President's top priority program has proven that it can increase rice production in a short time, just one year," he said.
According to him, the current supply condition even exceeds the available warehouse capacity. Therefore, the government must add storage space through a leasing scheme.
"Our warehouse is already full, the warehouse capacity is only 3 million tons, now we have leased 2 million tons of warehouse. In the future, we will lease more. It is possible that in the future, in 10 days, 20 days, the supply (of rice) will reach 5 million tons," he said.
The increase in supply is also clearly visible at the regional level, especially in South Sulawesi, where it has reached 761 thousand tons—more than twice the previous amount.
"In South Sulawesi alone, it used to be 300 thousand tons, today (rice supply is) 761,000 tons, twice as much. The total supply in Indonesia is 4.5 million tons. In the next 20 days, it will reach 5 million tons, and it is possible that in the next two months, it will reach 6 million tons," he said.
To support the absorption of farmers' production, the government is also continuously expanding storage capacity. "Imagine, the warehouses used to be leased to others because they were empty. Now we are leasing the warehouse," said Amran.
He ensured that the abundant supply condition had been verified directly through comprehensive field checks. "We must check directly. This is not the time for pretense. We see in front, we see the trucks. This is the backmost warehouse, it is all full," said Amran.
"Please convey this to those who do not believe. And for those who do not believe, they may check all the warehouses in Indonesia," he said.
With this achievement, the government is confident that the national food security will remain intact in the long run. He added that, considering the supply and reserves in the hotel, restaurant, and cafe sectors, as well as the current harvest, the availability of food nationwide is guaranteed.
"This means the following 11 months are secure. The supply for the Indonesian people for the next 11 months is secure," said Amran.
